How to Get Learning Assistance

What is learning assistance?

The Center for Academic Development (CAD) provides one-on-one learning assistance to students who make appointments or contact a learning specialist or tutor. A learning specialist or tutor will communicate with a student who seeks assistance or is referred by an instructor to the CAD. A student may contact the CAD at any stage of the process when writing a paper or having difficulty with assignments.

How does the CAD help students?

  • A learning specialist or tutor can offer strategies to help students complete assignments.

  • A learning specialist or tutor can help students plan, revise, and rewrite written assignments.

  • A learning specialist or tutor can provide individual tutoring to help students further develop their academic skills (writing, reading, critical thinking, and note taking, etc.)

  • A learning specialist or tutor does not proofread or edit papers, but offers feedback about drafts to students so that students may revise their drafts and produce better papers.

When should students contact the CAD?

  • Before starting a paper to explore the topic

  • When needing help with course content outside of class

  • During the writing of a draft for help with revision

  • While there is still time to work on the assignment (not the day before it is due)

How can students get learning assistance?

How to submit assignments online for feedback

Students may submit papers to a learning specialist for feedback and assistance prior to turning them in for a grade. Please follow these instructions to submit assignments via this web site.

  1. Write your paper and save it as a Microsoft Word document.
  2. Address an e-mail message to CyberCAD@nl.edu and attach the Microsoft Word document to the e-mail.
  3. Provide necessary information in your e-mail message.
Give a brief summary of the assignment guidelines, your name, your program of study, your campus, the date by which you need to receive feedback, and a phone number in case the learning specialist needs to contact you.
  4. Allow time to revise.
Please allow 2-3 days turnaround time. Although most papers can be returned within this time frame, long papers may require extra time.
