Graduate Stafford Loans
All graduate level students enrolled half-time may be eligible for up to $20,500 per academic year in Federal Stafford loans. A student's estimated family contribution (EFC) determines the type of loan each student is eligible to receive.
The EFC is calculated after a student completes a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). www.fafsa.ed.gov
NLU's school code is 001733.
After a student completes a FAFSA and has registered the student finance department will determine which loans a student is eligible for. Graduate students may be eligible for two types of loans.
Subsidized Stafford Loan - Eligibility is based on financial need. The federal government will pay the interest until you begin repayment. Repayment begins six months after the end of your program.
Unsubsidized Stafford Loan - Unsubsidized loan amounts are intended to help students that do not qualify for need-based aid. Unsubsidized loans start to accrue interest while the student is in school.
