Keeping on Track

In addition to your course work, there are several tasks you will need to complete as you progress through the undergraduate (BA) portion of the BA-MAT track. To help you stay on track, here is a recommended timetable for accomplishing these tasks.

Academic Year
Be sure to:
Freshman
  • Sign up for the BA-MAT track.*
    Note
    :
    This can be done any time before the beginning of the senior year;
i.e., before beginning the last 45 quarter hours of coursework.
Junior
  • Attend annual group advising and information session presented each fall by MAT Secondary Education faculty.
  • Apply to the MAT Secondary Education program.**   Transcripts will be evaluated, so you will need to arrange for them.
  • See MAT enrollment representative who will save in the space in the first MAT cluster available after expected date of graduation (or later date that same academic year, if so desired).
Senior
  • Attend annual group advising and information session presented each fall by MAT Secondary Education faculty.
  • Illinois Basic Skills Test***
  • Miller Analogies Test or GRE General Aptitude Section***
  • ISBE subject area tests***
  • After graduating with the BA, the student must commit to enter the MAT by paying $95 tuition deposit and submitting a registration form.****

*
Signing up for the BA-MAT track requires only that an "interest code" be placed with the student's name in Banner.   (The interest code is "BM".)   There are at least four ways to make this happen. Whichever method the student chooses, the student should be sure to contact an MAT enrollment representative as soon as he/she decides to participate in the BA-MAT program.
  1. The student may indicate interest in the BA-MAT on his/her initial application to NLU. Applications to the BA should indicate BA (major)/MAT (for example: BA English/MAT). The admissions office will then enter the interest code next to the student's name in Banner.
  2. The advisor and student can inform one of the MAT enrollment representatives that the student wishes to sign up for the BA-MAT track. The enrollment representative can then enter the interest code in Banner.
  3. The student can indicate participation in the BA-MAT track when the student applies to the MAT program at the end of the junior year.
  4. The student can mail in the tear-off section on the last page of the BA-MAT brochure.Students may also contact the call center at nluinfo@nl.edu .
**
Admission requirements for BA-MAT students, as of 2004, are
  1. Transcripts from all schools attended,
  2. Three references and a written statement of academic and professional goals,
  3. BA degree from NLU with 48 quarter hours (32 semester hours) that fulfill the specific subject area courses required for certification by the State of Illinois and the National College of Education,
  4. Overall GPA of at least 3.0 and GPA of at least 2.5 in the area of certification, 5) passing scores on the Illinois Test of Basic Skills, the Miller Analogies Test (or General Aptitude section of the Graduate Record Exam), and ISBE subject area tests.
***
Enrollment representatives for the MAT program will have information about exams and exam schedules.
****
The commitment must be made by June 15 for students wishing to start the MAT in the fall quarter, by October 15 for students wishing to begin the MAT in winter quarter, and by February 15 for students wishing to begin the MAT in the spring quarter. If the student does not commit by the appropriate date, the student's name will go into the pool of outside applicants and the student will lose admission preferences reserved for BA-MAT students. Students who commit by the appropriate deadline may also lose preferential treatment if they wait more than one year between receiving the BA and entering the MAT Program. The Enrollment Department will be responsible for monitoring adherence to these deadlines.

For questions about the MAT program, please consult the "Master of Arts in Teaching Secondary Education and 6-12 certification requirements Student Handbook".
