BA-MAT a dual degree program
- Bachelor of Arts in Biology, English, Mathematics or Social Science in the College of Arts and Sciences
- Master of Arts in Teaching Secondary Education from National College of Education.
Earn the most marketable degree combination for aspiring high school teachers. As the subject matter taught in high schools becomes increasingly sophisticated, a solid background in the content area you wish to teach is becoming more important in the hiring process. In our BA-MAT program you can earn two degrees in about five and a half years. You will acquire superior subject area knowledge as well as expertise in the art of teaching. Our BA-MAT program makes it possible for you to earn a BA degree in the content area you wish to teach, a secondary education teaching certificate and a Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) degree in one seamless program. So, you’ll eliminate delays and other problems that can accompany transfer from one college to another.
In the BA-MAT program, you’ll earn:
- a Bachelor of Arts in: Biology, English, Mathematics or Social Science and
- a teaching certificate and
- a Master of Arts in Teaching Secondary Education
In this unique program, you can count on a seamless transition between your bachelor’s and master’s degrees. That means a team of faculty members and enrollment representatives will make sure you meet all requirements for entrance to your master’s degree program during your undergraduate coursework. We also guarantee students of this program preference in admission to the MAT component of the program. So, you’ll take preference for enrollment over outside applicants if there are capacity issues for the master’s program.
Build a network of support. At National-Louis, you can expect one-on-one communication, guidance and mentoring from experienced faculty. Our classes usually have fewer than 20 students. And all classes, including laboratory and discussion sections, are taught by professors, not teaching assistants. The primary responsibility of our faculty is effective teaching; research comes second. Here, you can also expect to build a network of peer support. During your junior and senior years, you will take most of the courses required for the major with other students in the same program. The opportunity for peer support continues at the graduate level, where courses are arranged in cluster format (the same 18-25 students remain together throughout most of the first 19 semester hours of the program). There’s never been a better time to teach. Teaching is one of the few industries still seeing a very high market demand for new hires. As enrollments within secondary schools keep rising, many teachers are reaching retirement age. In fact, by 2006, nearly 18% of all Illinois teachers will be eligible to retire. Their retirement could lead to 25,000 additional job openings in Illinois that year.
