Scipio A.J. Colin III

Dr. Scipio A.J. Colin, III is an Associate Professor of Adult and Continuing Education at National-Louis University. She came to NLU from North Carolina State University where she was an Assistant Professor. She has served on the faculty at Indiana University--Northwest, Malcolm X College and the Central YMCA College and has over nine years of experience as a Literacy, ABE/GED Staff Developer and Instructor with the City Colleges of Chicago. She received a B.A. degree from Roosevelt University in Sociology and an M.A. in Urban Studies from Northeastern Illinois University. Following postgraduate studies at the University of Chicago, Dr. Colin earned an Ed.D in Adult and Continuing Education from Northern Illinois University.
She has served in a variety of leadership positions in the field including the Adult Education Research Conference Steering Committee; the Executive Committee of the Commission of Professors of Adult Education; the African American Adult Education Pre-Conference Planning Committee, and the Board of Directors, Adult Basic Education Section Chair, and the Urban Education Section Chair of the Illinois Association of Adult and Continuing Educators. Additionally, Dr. Colin has served on the Adult Learning editorial board and was a Consulting Editor for the Adult Education Quarterly, the major journal for theory and practice in the field.
Dr. Colin's research and scholarship focuses on the historical foundations of the field with particular emphasis on culturally grounded community based programming and the impact of racism on adult education theory and practice. Her scholarly works include articles, book chapters and a recent book, co-edited with Elisabeth Hayes, Confronting Racism and Sexism. She has been recognized for her outstanding contributions to the field of practice and research, including being the recipient of the AAACE Award for Meritorious Service to the Field and an Award for Outstanding Contributions to the Profession of Teaching and the Field of Educational History, at the International History of Education Symposium.
