National-Louis University
Electronic Reserves Policy
March 2004
About the Service:
The University Library offers an Electronic Reserves service. The service will make course reserve readings available to students via the Web. Material on e-reserve can be accessed via the NLU online library catalog (http://eisweb1.aiss.uic.edu/nlu/webvoy.htm).
Faculty may submit Electronic Reserve items in print form (one-sided and legible), or electronically as web addresses, faxes, MS Word or PDF documents. The material must contain 1) a full citation; 2) this notice of copyright: “This material may be protected by copyright law (Title 17 U.S. Code).” 3) Course Name and number as it appears in the Class Schedule; 4) Instructor name; 5) Instructor Contact Information and 6) Course Syllabus.
Electronic Reserves material may be delivered to the Evanston campus library, sent through inter-campus mail to Kathryn Miller at the Evanston campus library or may be faxed to 847-905-2850. Material received by the Evanston campus library will be processed on a first come, first serve basis. For materials to be available on the first day of a quarter, those materials must be submitted to the Evanston campus library at least one month prior to the beginning of the next term. Materials submitted after the 4 week period will be processed at the library’s earliest convenience.
To place items on Electronic Reserve, contact Kathryn Miller at 847-905-2850 (kmiller@nl.edu) at the Evanston Campus.
Electronic Reserves will operate in compliance with copyright law, fair use, and standard library copyright practices. The library is in compliance with the University’s statement and guidelines on copyright which can be found at http://www.nl.edu/CopyrightPermissions/copyright.cfm.
For Electronic Reserves that do not meet the required guidelines of fair use, copyright clearance is available at National-Louis through the Office of General Counsel. Please contact Lori Fedele at x4483. If copyright has been cleared for the materials submitted, please also submit copyright clearance documentation. For materials that will be posted under fair use, the library reserves the right to not post the materials due to copyright concerns. For the complete text of the U.S. Copyright Law, see http://www.loc.gov/copyright.title17/92chap1.html.
General E-Reserve Information:
- Items will be placed on E-Reserve for educational and research purposes only.
- Access to the Electronic Reserve items will be password protected. Library staff will provide the instructor with an individualized E-Reserve password. The instructor will be responsible for telling the students the appropriate password(s) and for informing the students of the importance of the copyright protection.
- All items will be removed from Electronic Reserves at the end of each term. Materials that remain on e-reserve for more than one quarter must be cleared for copyright permission through Lori Fedele in the Office of General at x4483.
- Only items permissible under copyright practices will be placed on Reserve. Electronic reserves cannot take the place of course pack copying. The amount of materials that are allowable in Electronic Reserves will depend on the amount of information requested and the source of the material. The NLU Library reserves the right to decline to place items on Electronic Reserve that are believed to violate copyright.
Individual course materials available on electronic reserve will be sorted in alphabetical order. At this time, an individual course’s electronic reserve material can not be sorted in a chronological order.
